Social Distancing Made Fun: Self-Guided Tours in Charleston

Now more than ever, it's important that we are vacationing safely. Exploring Downtown Charleston and learning about its history is always a fun activity to do with the family or whoever you're travelling with, and right now is a great time to take advantage of all the self-guided tours that are available! To give you some inspiration for what you might want to do next time you're here, we've gathered a few of our favorite walking tours around the Downtown area.

1. A Self-Guided DIY Walking Tour of French Quarter (Couple Travel the World)
   • The French Quarter is all about preserving some of the most historical parts of Charleston, and the ornate architecture. Our favorite spot on this tour is Dock Street Theater, the first structure built in America that was strictly used for theatrical performances!
2. Outer Banks Filming Locations in Charleston, South Carolina (Melissa on the Move)
   • One of the hottest shows on Netflix this year is Outer Banks, but did you know it was actually filmed right here in Charleston? This tour takes you through some of the iconic scenes, so you'll feel like you're in the show yourself!
3. Waterfront, Broad Street, and Rainbow Row (The City Sidewalks)
   • Rainbow Row is a classic must-see, and the homes and buildings around it are stunning as well! If you're an achitcture buff, this one's for you.
4. Downtown Shopping + King Street (The City Sidewalks)
   • If you find yourself saying "shopping is my cardio," then King Street is likely going to be your favorite part of Downtown Charleston. There are plenty of locally-owned shops, along with high-end stores like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Kate Spade!
5. Historic Charleston (Free Tours By Foot)
   • This tour offers a lot of the same spots in previouisly listed tours, but also includes audio recordings that will teach you about what you're seeing along the way! 
6. Historic Charleston Foundation's Mobile App Tour (Garden & Gun, Historic Charleston Foundation)
   • While it seems like everything these days has their own app, we're a huge fan of this one! The Historic Charleston Foundation has created an app to map out and walk you through the most historical parts of the city, and also includes audio recordings.
7. Downtown Religious Sites Tour (GPS My City)
   • Charleston wouldn't be the Holy City without its numerous religious sites. This tour will tell you all about them!
8. Food Crawling Through Charleston (GPS My City)
   • One of our favorite things about Charleston is the cuisine. If you don't know where to start on your culinary journey through the city, this tour will be a huge help!
9. Historical Houses Tour (GPS My City)
   • The city of Charleston places a lot of importance on preserving history through its architecture. The homes that maintain this charm and historic accuracy are even given an award, which you'll see on a lot of homes Downtown! There are also a few house museums, which will take you back in time to the pre-Civil War era. If you're intereste in stepping inside these homes, this tour is for you!
10. Create Your Own Walking Tour! (GPS My City)
    • There are so many things to see and do while in Downtown Charleston. If you're feeling overwhelmed with all of the possibilities, consider building your own tour! GPS My City allows you to select the attractions and sites that you want to see most, and it will build you a map to follow!
